Grass Is Greener photo
In 2003, Rich Horbacewski and Jackie Gennett left the city to pursue their dreams.  The result: a sustainable organic farm and an antique and textile business.   Grass is Greener Gardens is 130 beautiful acres where Rich and Jackie grow seasonal produce and raise chickens and lambs with the help of Rufus, the Red Heeler dog and Daisy the cat.

Rich and Jackie grow lettuce, radishes, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, onions, garlic, potatoes, melons, summer squash, winter squash, cucumbers, pumpkins and gourds.  Beautiful cut flowers are available mid June through mid September. They also offer lamb, chicken and fresh eggs!

You can find Grass is Greener Gardens during the 2007 season at the Beloit, Mineral Point, Dane County and Northside Farmers Markets.  In 2007 Grass Is Greener Gardens will offer a meat and poultry CSA with a delivery location on the north side of Chicago. Home delivery of lamb and chicken is also available.  Call for details.

Why have you chosen to grow organic?
Farming organically was a natural choice for us and although we are not certified, we are committed to organic practices.  We have always consumed as many organic products as we could find.  When we decided to farm, it never occurred to us that there was any other option other than organic.

Whats your favorite part of being an organic farmer?
We enjoy working the land in a way nature intended.  The seasonal variety is the most enjoyable for us.  Springtime brings asparagus; summer, tomatoes; fall, squash; and winter all the wonderful things we are able to can and store.  Our customers seem to enjoy the seasonal variety that nature intends as well!

What is your least favorite part?
Weeds.  We hate weeds.

Why should people buy organic products instead of other options?
We believe that buying local food from sources you know is most important.  The quality of organic food is simply much more natural and healthy than that of packaged, processed goods.

What makes your farm special?
Our farm is a variety of terrains, a variety of micro climates and a variety of products are produced.  Our farm is special because it is sustainable, organically maintained and it is a pleasure to be there!
